Philip F. Murtaugh will be hired by SAIC?
Rumors from China...
Philip F. Murtaugh, the former CEO of GM China may accept an offer from his former cooperator SAIC group, the biggest Chinese car maker. Murtaugh, the Mr. ChinaMinivan, helped GM China beat the serious challenges from Honda, Toyota and Hyundai in Chinese market this year by producing a type of minivan with the price of $5000 and 43miles/gallon in city driving. He was forced to leave earlier this year by GM and the story was reported in detail by NYTimes. Full story can also be found on my blog here.
It's said Murtaugh will be responsible for making SAIC brandnamed cars. SAIC currently has gaint joint ventures with both GM and VW and sold millions of VW and GM cars in China. SAIC recently brought a major portion of ROVER, an old British car maker in order to generate its own brands. Murtaugh could be a key character in making Chinese brand-named automobiles. Probably it's another bad news for Detroit.
