BIG DIG PAYS OFF!

Brazen Brazilians' big dig pays $90m
By Rio De Janeiro
August 10, 2005

Thieves dug a tunnel into a bank in north-eastern Brazil and stole 156 million reals ($A90 million) — the biggest bank robbery in the nation's history.

Police said that the gang rented a house near the bank and dug an 80-metre tunnel from the house to directly below the bank's vault.

"It's something you see in the movies," investigator Francisco Queiroga said.

"They dug a tunnel … that goes underneath two (city) blocks. They've been digging for three months."

The thieves broke into a branch of the Central Bank in Fortaleza in the north-eastern state of Ceara.

Because of the weekend closure the theft was not discovered until Monday.

"We've never heard of so much money being stolen from a bank in Brazil," Mr Queiroga said.

He and the bank staff at first estimated the tunnel to be 200-metres long but federal police who have taken over the case said later that it was 80-metres long.

It had been reinforced with wood and plastic and had been fitted out with electric lights.

Neighbours said that between six and 10 men had been seen at the house, which was rented under the name of a company that made artificial turf.

Police said that the thieves came up beneath the bank vault and then broke through the concrete floor to gain entry to the bank. Motion sensors inside the vault did not respond and failed to sound the alarm.

The amount stolen easily exceeds the haul taken in Britain's Great Train Robbery.

A member of that gang, Ronald Biggs, fled to Brazil and lived there for many years.

He and 11 other gang members robbed a Glasgow-to-London mail train in 1963 and made off with £2.6 million — a sum that would be worth about £30 million ($A70 million) by today's value.
